October glory maple vs autumn blaze maple11/24/2023 It's fast growing, strong and is supposed to have the most beautiful color of all oak trees. Whereas Autumn Blaze leaves are half that size, measuring 3 inches across. Red Sunset has a leaf 6 inches wide and the same length. It usually has 3 or 5 lobes, the depth of cuts may vary slightly. Also, Autumn Blaze turns red earlier than October Glory which is a slight disadvantage of the latter. I can't plant it here but if I was in California (What is your zone? ) I would consider the Nuttall oak. The leaf shape of both maples is very similar. The main difference between October Glory Maple and Autumn Blaze Maple is that the October Glory Maple leaves are much larger than Autumn Blaze Maple leaves, as a result, the first one looks more voluminous. They grow up to 3' pr year and live 300 years. I DID purchase a red oak for the other side of our house at the front of the yard. The Sugar Maple is almost twice as big as the October Glory, reaching a height of 60 feet and a width of 50 feet. They are both green in the summer, but in the fall October Glory is bright red while Sugar Maple has an orange hue. I didn't want to put something slower growing in that spot. The color of these maples is also different. I love the fall color of it and it's a hard wood but different sites say fast and slow growing. I've looked at Wildfire Black Gum but just not sure yet. Because mine is in the front yard I am still researching for something faster growing. IF the tree I was planting was in the backyard I would probably go with the Sugar maple but that's just me. Sugar maples don't grow quite as fast but they are hard wood so they are more durable and live twice as long. Both are red maples ( the silver maple hybrid actually makes it even weaker) which means they grow faster but have soft wood so they are more susceptible to loss of limbs ect. I have looked at both of these trees and have been researching for 2 months now. Plant Patent PP2116 issued in 1961.I am in the same situation only the huge tree we lost was in the front yard and it was a maple. Orange to red fall color for this cultivar is brilliant in most years. The tree you have specifically asked about, the 'Autumn Blaze' maple (Acer x fremanii 'Autumn Blaze') is an interesting selection that is actually a hybrid between two species of maple - the red. rubrum cultivars), and in more northern areas are sometimes subjected to frost prior to acquiring fall color. ‘Jeffersred’, sold under the trade name of AUTUMN BLAZE, is an older cultivar that was discovered by nurseryman Glenn Jeffers in the late 1960s. Specific epithet and common name honors Oliver Freeman who first grew A. Leaves retain good green color well into fall (longer than many other A. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Buy medium to mature sized from specialist nursery with 97 review score & UK wide. Otherwise, this tree can substitute for Red Sunset. Glossy dark green leaves with red stems have 3-5 lobes and are 3-6” across. Acer rubrum October Glory is a vibrant autumn-coloured Red Maple. October Glory colors later than Red Sunset and has a little less brilliant fall color. Flowers give way to red-tinged samaras (to 1 1/2” long). Attractive red flowers appear in early spring before the foliage emerges. Its leaves have deeper sinuses (cuts) than other Freeman Maple cultivars and more-closely. Of particular note was the dense canopy, good scaffold limbs, rapid growth rate, and brilliant red fall color. It was discovered in Urbana, Illinois as a landscape tree. It grows to 40-50’ tall with an oval rounded form. Autumn Fantasy Maple was developed by Willet Wandell of Wandell’s Nursery in 1990. ‘October Glory’ is a female cultivar that, as the cultivar name suggests, is perhaps best noted for its exceptional fall color. Specific epithet of rubrum meaning red is everywhere in evidence: red flowers in dense clusters in late March to early April (before the leaves appear), red fruit (initially reddish, two-winged samara), reddish stems and twigs, red buds, and, in the fall, excellent orange-red foliage color. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Flowers on a given tree are primarily male or female or monoecious and appear in late winter to early spring (March-April) before the leaves. Leaves are medium to dark green above and gray green below. Lobes have toothed margins and pointed tips. Leaves (to 2-5" long) have 3 principal triangular lobes (sometimes 5 lobes with the two lower lobes being largely suppressed). Quality of red fall color on species plants is variable. Emerging new growth leaves, leafstalks, twigs, flowers, fruit and fall color are red or tinged with red. In northern states, red maple usually occurs in wet bottomland, river flood plains and wet woods, but in Missouri it typically frequents drier, rocky upland areas. It grows faster than Norway and sugar maples, but slower than silver maple. It typically grows 40-60’ tall with a rounded to oval crown.
